Crying does not indicate that you are weak. Since birth, it has always been a sign that you are alive.

Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855)
by John Hunter Thompson
Oil on canvas, 41.3 x 34.8 cm
Collection: Brontë Parsonage Museum

Thompson was a friend of Branwell Brontë’s, part of his circle of Bradford artists and a fellow pupil of his art instructor William Robinson. He apparently put the finishing touches to some of Branwell’s commissioned portraits, including that of Mrs Kirby, in an attempt to make her look better than Branwell had.

This portrait of Charlotte was probably not painted during her lifetime, but is important since Thompson was actually acquainted with Charlotte.
